Miscanthus value chains: Impacts of soil on biomass quality and utilization in circular economy

The objective of WP4 is to explore different valorisation options for Miscanthus from MaCL. Assessed pathways are: gasification of Miscanthus biomass, paper production and recovery of valuable metals from biomass/gasification residues. Multiple product biorefinery approaches, including extraction of valuable products, will be assessed, which are key for economic viability: e.g. metal extraction before and after gasification, protein extraction from green harvested miscanthus before paper production. The aim is to develop gasification as a key process for contaminated biomass, since process conditions could be set to minimize (re)-emission of HM into environment and allow HM extraction from residues, before these are used as soil amendments.
